Blacker than black

Blacker than black
Chemistry is messy

So I had an unusual request lately, a good friend of mine asked if I could make titanium business cards.

Dammit. Hit the font key.

Why not indeed? So armed with the power of chemistry and a laser, let's do this.

MnSO₄

First off, you need some manganese sulfate. 3 taps in Taobao and it's delivered.

Next, you need some titanium. I got some 0.2 mm sheets.

Now, time to cut them to size.

Cool for a demo but not optimal

Now we have the blanks

Now that that is settled, let's set up our anodizing tank.

Our target goes on the left, the positive pole.

You can see it start to change colors

What a mess, but that's CHEMISTRY for ya

Let it go for about 7 minutes at ~30 volts.

That's as high as it goes. Probably should do 45 v

Pull it out, dry it off and it's a nice dark black.

Edges are weird because of the laser
Ok, that's much blacker

Now let's see if we can laser some lettering on it.

Oh my

Wellllll it's looking pretty punk. Possibly because the metal is too thin actually. 0.2 mm seems a bit on the flimsy side. Also, will have to dial the laser back a mite, as it's blasting through the other side heat-wise and de-blackening it. BUT it's a start 😁

So goes my Saturday night 🤓
